The London and Solent Branches of the Nautical Institute organized a “Pollution from Ships” seminar in Southampton on November 9-10, 2007, as the fifth part of their Maritime Excellence program of events.  On November 9, 2007, George M. Chalos presented a paper concerning criminal liability in the United States arising from both accidental and intentional discharges of oil and other potential pollution incidents.  Following the presentation, a lively discussion ensued amongst the both current and former seafarers, P&I insurers, IMO and other international regulatory representatives, and the many other maritime professionals in attendance.  Mr. Chalos is well regarded as one of the leading U.S. MARPOL and pollution litigators and advocate for the fair treatment of seafarers.
