George Kontakis is a class of 2000 graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Upon graduation, Mr. Kontakis received a Bachelor of Science degree (Cum Laude) in Marine Transportation, an unlimited Third Mate's License in the United States Merchant Marine and a Commission in the United States Naval Reserve. Mr. Kontakis attended Hofstra University School of Law, where he earned his Juris Doctor degree in 2007. Mr. Kontakis is a member of the Bars of the States of New York and New Jersey. Mr. Kontakis has been with our firm since 2003.
Prior to joining Chalos O'Connor, Mr. Kontakis worked as a shipbroker with M.I.D.Ship Marine in New York, where he negotiated on behalf of various dry cargo traders, as well as vessel owners, charterers and operators in all aspects of their chartering needs. Mr. Kontakis also acted as Chartering Manager of a dry cargo operator in New Jersey, where Mr. Kontakis gained valuable experience in all aspects of chartering and vessel operating.
Since joining Chalos, O'Connor & Duffy, LLP, Mr. Kontakis has been involved in a variety of admiralty matters, including civil actions, criminal actions, and arbitrated charter party disputes. Mr. Kontakis has also conducted numerous onboard investigations involving potential criminal liability for owners, operators and crewmembers.
